Warm and Dry Spring In Colombo

leave a comment »

This has been a surprisingly dry spring here in Colombo. Last year it was pouring, the dams were overflowing and there was plenty of electricity. This year, with sporadic water and occasional power outages, it feels like we are entering drought conditions. I’ve been able to do a few small trips that have resulted in the images below. Two of the images came from the Kelani temple, an important Buddhist place of worship on the Kelani River, just east of downtown Colombo. I’m working on a long-term project to document some of Sri Lanka’s amazing leaf insects. A colleague of mine in the school’s biology lab is working on rearing them. I’m enjoying learning about and documenting their life cycle. The elephant was preparing to take part in the Pera Hera Celebrations that happen here on the February poya.
